San Carlos

Although territorially distant, San Carlos and Perez Zeledón are brother cantons that have a whole list of similarities. San Carlos is a canton abundant in agricultural activities: extensive livestock, butter, milk and its derivatives; sugar canes, pineapples, citrus, tubers, basic grains, among others.

But it is also a canton of large cooperative enterprises and incomparable tourist attractions, such as Arenal Volcano and Lake Arenal, as well as caverns, waterfalls and thermal springs.

With 3347.98 km2, San Carlos is the most extensive of the 81 cantons of Costa Rica (more extensive than the provinces of Heredia and Cartago) and one of the most productive economic zones of Costa Rica.

The head of the canton, as well as some districts, serves as headquarters for regional offices of ministries and institutes, to bank branches and is the center of an intense economic activity.
