Hojancha

Located at the southern end of the Nicoya Peninsula, Hojancha is the smallest canton in the province of Guanacaste but it is emerging as a leader in sustainable development.

It has been called “the forest canton” of Costa Rica because of the development, management and use of forest plantations which complement other agricultural activities such as coffee production.

This place stands out nationwide because of the good participation and coordination of the institutions of the canton in productive and conservation activities. A good example of this is the creation and administration of the Monte Alto Natural Reserve.

But it is also a canton with a high touristic potential because of its beautiful beaches located a few kilometers away from the canton center, some of these true treasures of nature are Camaronal, Carrillo and Sámara.

Within Hojancha there is Puerto Carrillo, a beautiful beach bordered by coconut trees; the Matambú Reserve, an indigenous community that stands out thanks to its skilled artisans; and the Hojancha Botanical Garden, an oasis with native plants and clean air, right in the center of the city.

Everything points to an evolution of Hojancha towards tourism development and the community should prepare to increase the security of their homes, shops and institutional buildings with wrought iron structures.
