Unlike other coastal towns with intense tourist activity and its excellent strategic location, in the Pacific Central of Costa Rica, Matapalo is a community, ideal for those who want to enjoy a holiday.

The economy is primarily agricultural and livestock based, but tourism is also on the rise thanks to its very attractive characteristics: an extensive grey-sandy beach of eight kilometers – between the mouths of the rivers Savegre and New Hatillo- and abundant vegetation that borders it from the north.

The effort of its inhabitants to maintain the beach and its clean environment and to develop ecological projects, such as the protection of turtles that are born on the beach which allowed its inhabitants to wave the Ecological Blue Flag.

It is an ideal place for those looking for a quiet environment, but it does not mean that there are no facilities for lodging, food and practice certain sports – such as horseback riding and sport fishing – and the commute to other coastal communities and the rest of the country.

Southeast Matapalo there is the Hacienda Barú National Wildlife Refuge and The Bahía Ballena Marine National Park and the Manuel Antonio National Park at the north.
